My Grandma

My Grandma, my father´s mother,

She grew up as the doughter of a wealthy family, her father owned a clothes factory. Her elder brothers and a nanny provided a well cared childhood in Leipzig. Usually they spent their summer at the seashore and the winter in switzerland.

Later as a young girl with 19 years, war had begun, she spend some time as a member of the „ Bund deutscher Mädchen“ in Mittenwald in the Alps. There she met a young good looking soldier of the Gebirgsjäger Bataillon and they fell in love.

Sometime during the WWII, they had met again in Mittenwald and had written many letters, he prposed to her in a letter to her father. He answered by a letter in which he doubted his ability to care for her properly as he was only a lieutenant and of poor familiar background.

Nevertheless they married when he was at a so called „Fronturlaub“ for a couple of days.

Luckily having survived the war they both had some frightening and exhausting experience while escaping the soviet occupied eastern zone of Germany. Undiscovered they passed the border illegaly through the forests and while they heard the voices of the patroling soldiers.

She was already pregnant and after having arrived in Stuttgart she unfortunately had a misscarriage.

Later in the post war era they became a lucky family with 4 healthy sons, plenty of work, a house, a first car and so on.

Now with her 85 years she is living in a home. Her family now counts 4 sons, 4 doughters in law and 8 grandchildren.
